Juniper Berries

These dark brown berries have a long history—they’ve been found in Egyptian tombs, and were considered a symbol of fertility—and lore stated planting the plant by your door could ward off witches. The fruit of an evergreen tree, juniper berries are actually a teensy pine cone that looks like a berry from afar. Fittingly, they have a pine-like flavor that’s got a peppery kick, and is a common ingredient in gin distillation.
